We all have many roles and identities in our lives and they shift from decade to decade, from event to event.  I’m the daughter of an avid traveler, a woman who visited 6 of the 7 continents after she raised her four children.  She passed on that curiosity about the world, that wander-lust, to each of us.  My husband of 40+ years and our two daughters have become avid travelers, each in our own direction.

My own travels have taken on a different pattern from my mother’s travels; my travels have mostly been motivated by literature and art.  I taught high school and college English for thirty years and retired with the intent to travel, which was postponed for two years because of the pandemic during which time I read.  I am the very grateful recipient of two National Endowment for the Humanities opportunities for summer study.  It was on one such excursion that I became keenly aware of how integral PLACE is to STORY.   On the other NEH seminar I became keenly aware of how integral PLACE is to HISTORY.

A friend sent me a book of essays, The New York Times: Footsteps, and that has been my  inspiration to begin this blog–connecting books I’ve read with places I’ve been and things I’ve seen and learned from those experiences.

My plan is to post a new entry on the First and the Fifteenth of the month with thoughts and pictures about books and places. Unless otherwise noted, all of the pictures used here are taken by me.
